How Instagram counts characters

Instagram counts every character of the caption, including hashtags, mentions, spaces and line breaks. Hashtags count twice: once toward the 2,200 characters and once toward the 30 hashtag limit.

Among the 23 networks with a counter here, Instagram has the 7th shortest of 14 different limits. TikTok has the same limit of 2,200. Shorter is not worse: it only changes how you write. A mid-size limit leaves room for a short story and a call to action.

This counter counts each character (Unicode code point), the same way Postozo checks it before saving.

Rules Postozo checks for Instagram

Needs at least 1 photo or video. Max 2200 characters, max 30 hashtags. Up to 10 items in a carousel. Photos must be JPEG with a ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1. Follow-up comments are posted as comments (text only).

Before you post on Instagram

• Read the post on a phone screen. Most people will see it there, and long lines look longer on a small screen.
• Open every link once to check it works and goes to the right page.
• Keep the full, longer version of your text. You may want it for a network with more room than Instagram.
