How to use the counter
- Write or paste your post in the box.
- Read the table. Green means there is room, orange means less than 10% is left, red means the post is too long for that network.
- Shorten the post for the red networks, or give those channels their own shorter text in Postozo.
Limits that catch people out
- X counts every link as 23 characters, however long or short the link is. The counter does the same.
- Farcaster counts bytes, not characters. Emoji and many non-English letters use 2 to 4 bytes each, so a post in Hindi fills up faster than the same post in English.
- Telegram allows 4,096 characters for a text message, but only 1,024 for the caption of a photo or video.
- Instagram allows 2,200 characters and up to 30 hashtags. Hashtags count as characters too.
- Mastodon usually allows 500, but each server can set its own limit.
- Bluesky allows 300 and Threads 500, so a post written for Threads may need a shorter version for Bluesky.
Write once, fit everywhere
In Postozo, you write the main post once and give any channel its own shorter text. The editor checks each limit before the post is saved, and the AI assistant can fit the post to each network for you. See the post editor.
Tips for writing to a limit
- Write for the tightest network last. Finish the full version, then cut it down for X, Bluesky or Farcaster.
- Put the main point in the first sentence, so it survives any cut.
- Move hashtags and links into a first comment on networks that support it, like Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.
- Check emoji on Farcaster, where each one can use up to 4 bytes.
Why the limits differ
Each network sets its own limit for how long a post can be. Short limits, like 280 on X or 300 on Bluesky, keep feeds quick to read. Long limits, like 3,000 on LinkedIn or 63,206 on Facebook, leave room for stories. Chat apps like Discord and Telegram limit single messages, and blog networks have no practical limit at all. The table above uses the same numbers Postozo checks before it saves a post.

Questions
How are characters counted?
Letters, spaces, line breaks and emoji each count. On X every link counts as 23 characters, whatever its length. On Farcaster the limit is in bytes, so emoji and some letters count as more than 1.
Is my text saved?
No. The counting happens in your browser. Nothing is sent to us.
What is the X limit for verified accounts?
X Premium accounts can post up to 25,000 characters. The table shows the standard 280.
What is the character limit for social media posts?
Each network sets its own. Bluesky allows 300, X 280 on a standard account, Threads and Mastodon 500, Instagram 2,200, LinkedIn 3,000 and Facebook 63,206. The table above lists all of them.
Does the counter work with Hindi and emoji?
Yes. It counts characters the way each network does. On Farcaster, which counts bytes, Hindi letters and emoji use more of the limit than English letters.
Why are some networks missing?
Networks with no practical text limit, like WordPress, Medium, DEV and Hashnode, are left out. Anything you write fits.
