How Nostr counts characters

Postozo allows up to 10,000 characters in a Nostr note. Photos and videos are added as links at the end of the note, and those links also count.

Among the 23 networks with a counter here, Nostr has the 11th shortest of 14 different limits. Lemmy and Dribbble have the same limit of 10,000. Shorter is not worse: it only changes how you write. A long limit means the first lines matter most, because that is what people see before they open the post.

This counter counts each character (Unicode code point), the same way Postozo checks it before saving.

Rules Postozo checks for Nostr

Publishes a text note (kind 1) signed with your key to your relays. Photos and videos are added as links at the end of the note. Hashtags become Nostr tags. Follow-up comments become replies.

How to use this Nostr counter

1. Write or paste your Nostr note in the box above.
2. Watch the "left" number. It turns amber when less than 10% is left and red when the text is too long.
3. Count links and hashtags as part of the text: Nostr counts them too.
4. Too long? Move the rest to a follow-up. Postozo posts follow-ups as a thread.

Connecting Nostr to Postozo

You connect Nostr by pasting your details, which Postozo stores encrypted:

• Private key (nsec): Your Nostr secret key. It is stored encrypted and used only to sign your notes. Anyone with this key can post as you.
• Relays (optional): The servers that receive your notes, separated by commas. Leave empty to use 3 popular public relays.

Nostr does not share statistics with Postozo, so you see the publish status and the live link for each post.

Tips for Nostr posts

• Hashtags in the text become Nostr tags, so people can find the note.
• Follow-up comments become replies, so you can post a thread.
• Add your own relays, or use the 3 popular public relays Postozo picks by default.
• Some relays only accept paying members. If a relay refuses, add another.

Before you post on Nostr

• Read the post on a phone screen. Most people will see it there, and long lines look longer on a small screen.
• Open every link once to check it works and goes to the right page.
• Keep the full, longer version of your text. You may want it for a network with more room than Nostr.

Write once, fit every network
